From the desk of Jay Edward
Miller:
I've been
interviewing clients, writing resumes, and teaching resume
writing for more than 19 years. I've had mostly successes with
a few failures sprinkled in. And if you are looking for a
typical resume writer, I am probably not the one you
want.
Why?
Here are a few of the reasons:
I
don't religiously obey any so-called
absolute "rules" or "ten commandments" of resume
writing.
I
don't judge my success by my
credentials, certifications, or how I am looked at by my
peers, but solely on the success of my clients.
I
don't buy into the "expert" or
"guru" mentality. I have MAJOR issues with more than 90%
of the advice and tips on resume writing you get from
online and offline sources.
I
don't offer "free evaluations" as a
marketing ploy. If you expect a genuine evaluation from
these offers, you will be disappointed.
I
don't settle for generic,
non-descript resumes by giving out a bunch of worn out
samples to copy, cookie-cutter templates to follow or
fill-in-the-blanks software contraptions.
Yea,
sometimes my approach seems a little out of the
mainstream but, as
long as my clients are getting interviews, I have no problem
with that.
I
get top dollar for writing resumes and I enjoy my work. But I
found out that it was a lot more fun to teach people how
to write their own resume. I liked the interaction of a
classroom more than sitting in front of a computer screen. It
was while teaching resume writing to others, that I learned the
real "secrets" of resume writing.
We
have all seen books, tips and advice claiming to know the
"secrets" to writing a resume that gets interviews. You may
have also noticed that most of these so-called "secrets"
are not secret at all. For example: While online, I just saw a
"secret" that said to "start each sentence with an action
verb". Whooopeeedooo! Some secret. Every resume book ever
written told you that one.
But
in fact, there are some important things, genuine
secrets, about resumes that most job hunters don't
know. Things that you seldom find in resume
books and job search websites. For example:
Resume Secret
#1: Writing skills are not the most important
skills in creating a great resume. Ask any marketing
professional and they will tell you that there are many things
more important than writing skills in creating good
print advertising. It is the same with your
resume.
Resume Secret
#2: Most people can easily write their own quality,
first-rate, updateable. resume. Not only that, they
can do it quickly. I did not learn this "secret" from my
years writing resumes; I learned it from my years TEACHING
people how to write resumes. And I am not talking about
some fill-in-the-blanks joke of a template resume, or some
resume software contraption or copying some generic resume
samples. This is the real deal. A resume that advances your
career; a resume that gets you the interviews you are
after; a resume you are proud of. Resumes better than what
professional resumes writers could produce for you. Once you
learn some basic principles, writing your own resume is
surprisingly easy.
Resume Secret
#3: Most of the resume advice out there is just
plain wrong. This may sound arrogant on my part; that
is one of the main reasons why I give away a portion of my book
(see below). I spend almost twelve pages discussing
how and why there is so much wrong-headed information out
there. It is in the chapter titled "Basic Things You Need
To Know". Even if you never buy the book, I challenge you to
read this.
Resume Secret
#4: Resume grammar has a self-correcting quality to
it. It is simpler and easier than conventional English
grammar. Go through the four steps outlined in the book and
your resume will read and sound as good or better and more
business-like than any expensive resume you purchase from
a professional service.
Resume Secret
#5: This is the dirty little secret no one talks
about -- updating. Nearly everyone, including myself,
tells you that to conduct a first-rate, professional job
search, your resume needs to be updated and tailored for
every employer you contact. But the professional resume
writing services don't usually tell you what a HUGE,
expensive, frustrating pain the neck it is (I have found
that some do not even offer updating). After you have your
resume written, you need to give your writer the information
you have gathered on the 30 employers you want to
apply to. The writer will then edit the 30 versions of
your resume. You will need to proofread and approve the 30
versions. And, of course, you will pay the writer a fee
for his or her time, effort, printing and more.
Besides the logistical nightmare, the costs can easily exceed
the original price of the resume. This is a compelling
argument for creating, and
updating, your resume
yourself.
Resume Secret
#6: If you use the right techniques, the employer
will pretty much tell you what to say in your resume.
This one is a shocker to some people, but it is absolutely
true. I am going to stop revealing "secrets" for now
before I give away too much
information.

Irresistible
Resume
A resume creator's
guide. A job
searcher's approach to marketing.
All designed so that employers with a need will
respond.
You
may be thinking that this is just another book on "how to write
a resume". After all, large chain booksellers have whole
sections devoted to the topic. Well, let me be
clear:
It's
NOT just another "how-to" book.
When
I first came up with Irresistible Resume, it was my class
handout. I began putting it together because I had read just
about everything out there and found nothing that matched
the techniques that I used and wanted to teach. That's when I
sat down and began to write my own resume creation guidelines
based on the success of my clients.
Every idea in
this book has been used and tested. It is not mere theory, it,
in fact, works, and it works
consistently.
Perhaps I have
convinced you to write your own resume, or maybe I
haven't. But if I have, you need to have your ducks lined
up in a row or it is not going to click. That is the
power of Irresistible Resume.
It
is written in a very straightforward manner. You are not going
to find any hype or fluff. It isn't fuzzy and the only
motivational aspect is the satisfaction of energizing your job
search. In test after test, nearly everyone finished book
and were starting on their resume in one evening. Many said
they started on the resume while still reading the
book.
You
will see:
Why most resumes fail. There are
several reasons, but mostly because your resume is not
standing out. I spend a lot of time on this because most
people are not honest with themselves.
The "what's in it for me
technique" for cutting through the dry list of features
and getting to the good stuff -- the
benefits.
How to put together the most
difficult part of the resume. The part that will make
or break a resume, the opening
lines.
Why there are things you must do
before you write a single line.
Why the interview is almost
always yours to lose.
Exactly what to do to turn your
resume into an interview grabbing
machine.
Why writing skills are not the
most important factor. Using resume grammar, you
will express yourself without fluff and come
across as well as any professional.
How your resume will stand out
from all the others out there. When you are on top of the
pile, it doesn't matter how high the pile
is.
The time you waste with
traditional "how-to" resume books, worthless tips, generic
samples, dumb software and templates, will cost in lost
interviews and job offers.
I am in the job search
business. I know the hard work involved in trying to move up
the ladder -- or even trying to stay on the ladder.
Corporate trash
cans are filled with
resumes from people who thought they following the
latest advice or
hired a good-intentioned writer that thought they knew his
or her stuff. So before you start thinking that $37 dollars is
too much to spend on my time tested resume creation techniques,
think about the cost of sitting out in the cold waiting for
interviews that are never going to come.
Recently I held closed door
classes for an outplacement company in Chicago. They paid a lot
of money for twelve people to attend. They listened and watched
as I revealed everything I know
about Resume
Writing and
Job Search Techniques I have used over the past 19 years. It
was my life's work condensed into one powerful
class.
Once it was over I wanted to
see the results of some people who did not attend the
class, but only had access to manual. I wanted to see if they
could experience the same results just using the manual I
gave the twelve people in the class.
I published the manual and
gave it out to my clients, job seekers who were looking for
help. I wanted to see what kind of resume they would write;
what kind of success they would have. My only requirement is
these people represent a wide range of work backgrounds, from
newbie to executive.
What happened next even amazed
me.
The positive feedback poured in within
days.

"I Thought This Would Be
Just
'Another' How-to Resume
Writing Class..."
"I thought that
this would be just another how-to
resume
writing class. Was I ever
wrong. Just after reading the
introduction I
already wanted to stop and
start writing my Resume. If you are
using a Resume, you have to
read this material.

"Got a new job and
Doubled My Salary"
"I like to work fast, so I
only spent a couple hours reading the
manual and another hour writing the
Resume. I got the job and doubled my
salary with about 3 hours of effort.
I feel like I am just getting started
and will do even better as I put more
time into it."
-- Michael
Stonehouse -- Chicago,
Illinois

"I'm Even Getting
Referred To Other Companies By
Interviewers!"
Since
attending the class I used the
Resume
writing methods to rewrite
my Resume. I increased the interviews I
was getting the first day. Companies are
so impressed that they want to hire me
even if they don't have a need! I'm even
getting referred to other companies by
interviewers! This is
amazing.
-- Marian Leoni, River Oaks,
Illinois

"Using Just One Idea...
I've
Doubled My Response Rate"
"I
was in such a bind, I only had time to
change the top few lines of the first
page on my Resume using Resume
Writing techniques I
learned. And I doubled the
interviews I
was getting
. Now this is
just one
tip.
Imagine what will happen when I put
everything into practice!"

Illinois

"I Did A "Re-Blast" Of My
Resume... My Results Tripled"
It
had to be the Resume, nothing else explains
it. Before I went to the class, I hired a
company to email blast my Resume to a bunch
of companies, about a thousand, and got
five interviews. This is about what I was
told to expect. After the class, I totally
rewrote my Resume. The blasting service
allowed a second mailing for no extra
charge, so I did a re-blast of my Resume
and my results tripled.
And the interviews came from companies that
had already received my first Resume. It
works.

Michigan

"A
Step-By-Step 'How To And
Why'
Guide To Creating a
Powerful Resume"
"I've
gotta say I have been utterly clueless
when it comes to writing my Resume. I've
done it myself, but up until now it has
always been hit and miss.
I
tried to follow some books, but I was
never happy with the results. The
Irresistible Resume classes changed all
that for me. It gave me a
step-by-step "how to and
why" guide to creating a
powerful Resume.
I
was blown away by the depth of the
instructions and manner in which it is
presented. I am now confident that when
a company has a need they will
call me
.
-- David Henry Aaron, Belmont,
Michigan

"The results are
staggering"
"The Irresistible Resume
manual is forcing me (in a nice way) to
revalue everything I have done up to
now. The results are staggering.
I can hardly believe it. I am spending
the next few days writing two more
resumes."
-- Chet Reese,
Denver, Colorado

Same job hunter, same skills
and experience
but double
the interviews,
why?
Recently a guy named
Jerry called me up and asked me for help
with his job search.
Like so many people I
talk with, his job search was suffering
from a nasty case of no
interviews.
You know what that
means.
Lots of work and even
more frustration.
So Jerry's efforts
were getting about 1 interview every week
while sending out more than 10-15 resumes
per day.
Over the phone, I
gave Jerry some changes he should make on
his Resume right away. This was on a
Monday. By Friday he had seven interviews
from his new Resume.
All he did was
implement some changes I gave him over the
phone, and it produced impressive results
-- all from the same amount of
resumes he was sending out.
In fact, Jerry
recently reported...
"My interview rate has
jumped from one interview
per week to one per day
(that's
a seven-fold increase
in interviews)
after implementing a few suggestions. Plus
the quality of the interviews has increased
dramatically."
Those extra interviews
add immeasurable leverage to
Jerry's job
search,
the chances of landing the job he really
wants at the salary he wants
skyrockets.
The thing is, he
really hasn't even scratched the surface of
what is possible with his career.
I've only given him
five or six simple suggestions and already
he has all the interviews he can
handle.
